REWIND
I remember my first time seeing an Avid editing system and thinking how far in the future I had come. I was in the beginning days of non-linear editing when edit systems could cost a million dollars. While I hand-cut film in school (as an ode to film history) everything was becoming digital in 1995. Coming out of film school in NYC, I am among the luckiest students to have worked my first job with Ken Burns; the preeminent historical documentary filmmaker. Followed by assistant editor jobs on multiple long-form PBS documentaries with Academy award-winning directors and producers, then baptism by fire at ABC News during the events of 9/11, followed by exciting work during the high-definition transition: I worked on the forefront. While I’ve had the privilege to work with several of the most famous names in media and news, the highlights of my career in television production are the humblest of moments: rollerblading to work up and down the avenues of Manhattan, sleeping under Avids for overnights shifts, hauling ¾” tape decks across city blocks (west-bound). It is through challenges (all the media went offline half an hour to air) and unglamorous work that we grow the most as professionals.
As an editor and co-producer of numerous non-fiction films and videos for companies big and small, I live by one rule: Show me, don't tell me. I've successfully straddled verite documentaries where there is no script along with corporate news where scripts are tightly controlled. I love it all. My formative years in the film industry taught me how to manage scale in media like logging 10,000 reels of film for one documentary. Later, in the news business, I learned how to deliver short content during hurricanes and wars which pretty much sums up how I work today: If it's not challenging, I'm probably not interested.
As a true filmmaker and creative I love the collaborative process and still get excited when someone does something I can't do.
Editing video to me is natural. I can do it in the dark, in my sleep, on the road, on a mountain, or in a car - and I have done all of those.

My process is simple. I'm highly organized and approach each project with a plan. I like to beat deadlines and do as much preparation work as possible. I choose projects carefully and don't work on material that doesn't keep me engaged. Be passionate but focused.
- Business approach: I am highly client-oriented and believe if you're not happy, I'm not happy. Integrating print branding elements with video is what I excel at. Creating a polished piece is what separates professionals from hobbyists.
- Style: Graphics and visual effects are great only if they help tell the story.
- Pet peeve: Collaborators who think there is no picture coverage; there is always a visual solution.
- Philosophy: Creativity is innate: It can't be learned. The story sometimes unfolds on its own as with all things human.
